A dietary supplement is intended to provide nutrients that may otherwise not be consumed in sufficient quantities. Supplements as generally understood include vitamins, minerals, fiber, fatty acids, or amino acids, among other substances. There are more than 50,000 dietary supplements available. More than half of the U.S. adult population (53% – 55%) consumes dietary supplements, with the most common ones being multivitamins.
Over-the-counter (OTC) vitamins and supplements contain specialized formulations that target gender- and age-specific concerns, as well as formulations that address nutritional needs during childhood, the teen years, the reproductive years, menopause, and for those over the age of fifty. Some multivitamin supplements are also formulated to support cardiovascular health, vision, and memory. Other formulations are marketed for those who engage in sports, those on weight loss plans, and those who want to increase their energy level.
Multivitamin and multimineral supplements come in a variety of dosage forms, including tablets and chewables, liquid, and gummy forms. While it is possible to meet nutritional needs through dietary means alone, many choose to use a multivitamin or multimineral supplement to ensure optimal health. Those with severe nutritional deficiencies should always be referred to their primary healthcare provider for further evaluation.
The term nutraceutical was coined in the 1990’s by Dr. Stephen DeFelice. He defined nutraceutical as “any substance that is a food or a part of a food and provides medical or health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease. Such products may range from isolated nutrients, dietary supplements and specific diets to genetically designer foods, herbal products, and processed foods such as cereals, soups and beverages.” Health Canada defines nutraceuticals as “a product isolated or purified from foods, and generally sold in medicinal forms not usually associated with food and demonstrated to have a physiological benefit or provide protection against chronic disease.”
Sport nutrition is the study and practice of nutrition and diet as it relates to athletic performance. It is primarily concerned with the type and quantity of fluid and food taken by an athlete, and deals with nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and organic substances such as carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Although an important part of many sports training regimens, it is most commonly considered in strength sports (such as weight lifting and bodybuilding) and endurance sports (for example cycling, running, swimming). > SEE MORE
Naturopathy or naturopathic medicine is a form of alternative medicine employing a wide array of “natural” treatments, including homeopathy, herbalism, and acupuncture, as well as diet and lifestyle counseling. Naturopaths favor a holistic approach with non-invasive treatment and generally avoid the use of surgery and drugs. Naturopathic philosophy is based on a belief in vitalism and self-healing, and practitioners often prefer comprehensive methods of treatment combining diet and lifestyle changes.
Historically used in Chinese medicine for over a thousand years, TCM is experiencing a strong surge of demand from consumers seeking purely herbal or natural remedies. TCM was conventionally taken as patent herbal extracts, although modern methods have brought TCM to the OTC platform in convenient tablet, pill, liquid, extract powder or concentrate forms.
